Chapter 12
Lily, still in miniature and sitting inside my ear, kept up a running commentary on various women I should approach, but I stayed focused instead on finding egomaniacs. There were more than I’d expected, but none seemed to be Ricci.
When I reached the front of the drink line, I ordered a fifteen-dollar wheat microbrew. The bartender’s face was full of studs and rings, and she wore a spiked collar and black leather. A little overdone in my opinion, but she didn’t ask what I thought.
Damn, this place was dull. Even the women were less beautiful than I remembered at past raves, except for Benoit. As soon as I got my beer, I wandered around, looking for her without seeming too interested.
After I circled one large, nebulous group, I spotted her sitting at a booth with several demons, three guys and two women. None of them looked familiar, but all of the men were vampires, and so was one of the women. Their cool, sophisticated, bored looks were a dead giveaway. So far, they were the only other immortals I’d noticed.
One male bloodsucker snuggled up to Benoit. She glared at him coldly, the way women did to cool the ardor of a stranger they preferred to avoid. The vampire wasn’t discouraged, and I recognized his cackle. Mick Clancy was one of Ricci’s thugs in disguise. With a sudden heavy feeling, I realized Ricci wasn’t present. Chasing Benoit through the middle of the night hadn’t panned out.
“Finally found Ricci’s group but not him,” I told Lily.
I would’ve liked to hear their conversation, but I couldn’t risk asking her to buzz and eavesdrop. The immortals in that group could see her if she got close enough.
The real question was, where was their boss? He hadn’t arrived, and given the way Mick kept fondling Benoit, Ricci wouldn’t be coming. He’d already palmed her off on his flunky.
“Poor Snow White,” I told Lily. “Ricci has already cast her aside.”
“If he doesn’t desire her,” she said, “he’s insane. You should console her. I’m sure, once she realizes how wealthy you are, she’ll count her many blessings.”
“As soon as I finish this job, I’ll find someone to snuggle with.”
While I watched Benoit fighting off Mick, I wondered why I had so much trouble in relationships. I couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him. I assumed she was staying in the hope Ricci would appear, but I was already sure he wouldn’t because Mick was being such a persistent little prick. Then he whispered something in Benoit’s ear.
She stood, said something short and sharp back, and threw her drink at him. Yeah, Ricci had traded her down to the minor leagues. With a proud flick of her wavy black hair, she strutted toward the bar again.
Son of a bitch! I knew exactly how disappointed she was. I’d spent fifty bucks to get in, too, and so far, all either one of us had to show for it was a handful of vampires. But I realized Mick or one of the others in that group might lead me to their boss.
